Gala exhibition during Berlinale

edited 09.02.2015

Man and Nature
in
Zimbabwean Stone Sculpture

The artists of Zimbabwe - whether they express themselves in stones, paintings or every day materials - share the connectedness between man and nature with most other African people.
In the stone sculptures we find this expressed, when we study a sculpture such as "Mountain Animal" by Godfrey Kututwa, where one side is the face of a human being, the other the head of an animal.
Or "Children under a Palm Tree", a theme often explored by the late Henry of Tengenge and his son, Mike Munyaradzi.
For these artists, as for their brothers and sisters, everything in nature is alive. This certainly goes for the stones, they work with. "I speak to the stone, and if it answers me back, I know we are in good books, and can reveal the sculpture within".
In Zimbabwe stones form a significant part of the landscape; the "Balancing Rocks" are amazing sights, created through million of years; as is the mountain called "Lion's Head".

Man and Nature - Nature and Man -
the connectedness is expressed
in Zimbabwean Stone Sculptures again and again.

Berlinale opening hours:
daily 11 am - 8 pm

Friends Forever Supports Global Tree Planting Project

edited 20.12.2013

Dear good friends,
Friends Forever has decided to join a global action of planting 14.000.000 trees all over the world, in an effort to give our globe a new “lung”, specifically by supporting economically efforts to plant trees, also in the country of our beloved artists, Zimbabwe.
We all know that in many countries, people have been cutting down trees to get life important firewood for the daily cooking of food.
These trees must be replaced by new, and now a global network of our friends has decided to plant them, so that some of the dire consequences of this many years’ practice can be counteracted upon.
Our colleagues in Ruwa, Zimbabwe, where most of the sculptures, we all love, are being created, have decided to take part in this action. Between Christmas and New Year’s Evening  they will be planting a great number of small tree siblings, around our own premises and in other places in the country, in cooperation with other well meaning people, who run projects of farming development and also projects of fighting the AIDS epidemic.
Now we have decided to join this great plan in practice.
Therefore, we invite you to join this through buying art from our exhibitions.
During the days from 27th of December through January 2nd 2014, we offer you beautiful stone prints by the late Anderson Mukomberanwa for the price of 50€. All income from the sales of these will be directed uncut towards this tree planting and climate change fighting project.
In the same period, any sculpture bought by you, will generate 2% of the price towards the same project.
Normally, Friends Forever supports the artists simply by selling their art to a great audience; whereby they are able to support themselves and their families.
Now we add this objective to our activities for this short period.
If we find that there is good reason in this, meaning that you will respond positively to this idea and support it by buying a stone print or a sculpture, we shall consider the possibility of extending the period of our support for this life preserving effort.

Please feel welcome to join us in this.

Many greetings and wishes for a Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year

Friends Forever vor der Burg Liechtenstein

edited 23.07.2013

edited 11.08.2012

Fanizani Akuda died

edited 06.02.2011

Sad news arrived today from Zimbabwe. The great artist Fanizani Akuda has died at the age of 78. Our hearts are full of sadness and we are grieving this loss of a real Master Sculptor of Zimbabwe. His wonderful sculptures will stay in this world and so will the spirit of Fanizani Akuda.

Fanizani Akuda (1932 – 2011).
“It must come from the heart!” – he said.
And so it did – all his life.
Fanizani Akuda.
This wonderful man and great artist gave the world so much and it always came directly from his heart. For more than 40 years he worked with stones of all sizes every day, because he knew he had something to give, which was unique.
When he was creating his friendly and humorous smiling faces and whistlers, families, mothers with children, even conferences; lions and elephants and baboons – how he loved to tell the story about the Germans, who call it not a baboon, but a “Pavian”!
And when he was speaking to the younger generations of artists, urging all to listen to their own hearts and go for the great, step by step:  – “together we will build a mountain; when we pool our small streams together, a river will emerge and bring us all forward.”
This love and humbleness is reflected in each and every single sculpture he ever created, and is felt by people everywhere; therefore he is loved by so many thousands of people, who have come to know him through his sculptures of all sizes and colours – they all connect immediately with the stones – as if the man himself is present in each and every one of them – and in fact I believe he is. His intentions and good-humoured character is reaching out to you whether you stand in front of a very small whistler or a gigantic verdite lion.
We who have had the privilege of knowing Fanizani in person cherish all moments spend in his company and are happy that we have been trusted with the task of bringing his art to people practically everywhere in the world. All their lives have been enriched by it.
And so have ours.
We shall miss the man and remember him for all those good moments. And all those sculptures will keep him present among us.
If Fanizani is looking on us right now, I am sure he with a true smiling face would be saying:
“Nice is Nice” – and we should answer him right back: “Yes, and you are!”
Fanizani Akuda – may you rest in peace.

Colleen Madamombe dies Sunday, 31st of May 2009

edited 03.06.2009

Sunday the 31st of May, 2009 we received the disturbing and sad message that Colleen Madamombe, an artist, who has been esteemed in Zimbabwe and abroad all her artistic life, and who was a faithful and very productive artist with Friends Forever, had died that same morning in her home in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Friends Forever immediately went to offer our support to the children, who had lost their mother. Tuesday the 2nd of June Colleen was buried in her home village, the place where she was born and grew up.
350 persons were present, and Friends Forever curator Sune Joergensen delivered the following speech.
ON THE SAD OCCASION OF COLLEEN MADAMOMBE’s FUNERAL
Dear friends gathered here today on the very sad occasion of having to bury one of Zimbabwe’s greatest stone sculptors, Colleen Madamombe.
I want to join in today’s choir of mourning and of praise for a great artist gone away. I met Colleen in June 2004 and we became friends. We were then at the humble beginnings of what would become Friends Forever, an idea of bringing artists together and show the world, what Zimbabwean artists talk about through their beautiful art: brotherly love, caring for each other in the family and elsewhere, a strong relationship to nature and its animals, keeping up traditions as a strengthening of today’s life, and portraying the everyday life of women in Zimbabwe, which was Colleen’s chosen subject matter.
Colleen took pride in showing the world how women work, and suffer and enjoy life and children, have to make money by selling flowers or vegetables from the field, how mothers care about their children, and sisters about their sisters. As the true world artist she was, she could go on and on exploring this theme, and every time she came up with new themes. And in every single sculpture, be it small or very large, she managed to bring about pride as the essential message, a pride which was part of herself all the way.
I have personally experienced this pride every time I came to see her in Hatfield. She wanted to bring this proud image to the world, and thousands of people out there have met it and been struck with the forceful expression, she as a true ambassador for Zimbabwean women brought to them.
A true daughter of Zimbabwe and a Zimbabwean mother.
Zimbabwe should be proud of Colleen and pay her the greatest tribute. Her children I know are proud of their mother the artist and the mother, and I send you all my warmest greetings. We were and still are friends forever.
Good bye to Colleen, you meant so much to us, and you will be there always with your humour, your pride, your stubbornness and above all your honesty in art.
Let us remain Friends – FOREVER.

Lawrence Mukomberanwa visits Spain

edited 11.03.2005

The town of Begues had invited Lawrence Mukomberanwa as a representative of Friends Forever to visit Barcelona for the opening of the exhibition and to give lectures and demonstrations to guests as well as school classes, other artists etc.
While in Begues, Lawrence created a new piece, called "Lullaby", which was given to the town.
When home in Zimbabwe again, he told vividly about the experience to all the other artists in Friends Forever.
